보조배터리, 손 안의 편리함에 숨겨진 시한폭탄,

오늘 새벽 27일(목) 홍콩 청샤완의 한 아파트에서 발생한 보조배터리 화재 사고는 현대인의 필수품이 순간의 방심으로 얼마나 치명적인 위협이 될 수 있는지 명확히 보여주었다.
최근 3년간 홍콩 내에서만 무려 122건의 보조배터리 관련 화재가 보고되었으며, 주거지뿐만 아니라 지하철(MTR)과 항공기 객실 내 발화로 승객들이 긴급 대피하는 소동이 연이어 발생하고 있다.

손바닥만 한 보조배터리가 대형 화재로 이어지는 주원인은 '열폭주(Thermal Runaway)' 현상이다. 내부 리튬이온 전지가 과충전되거나 외부 충격을 받으면 순간적으로 수백 도까지 온도가 치솟으며 폭발한다.
특히 홍콩과 같이 밀집도가 높고 고층 주거지가 많은 환경에서는 배터리 화재 시 발생하는 플루오린화수소 등 치명적인 유독가스가 빠르게 차올라 인접 가구로의 연쇄 확산 및 대피 제약 위험이 극대화된다.
이 같은 재앙을 예방하기 위해서는 구매 단계부터 보관, 이동에 이르기까지 생활 속 안전 수칙을 철저히 습관화해야 한다.
안전한 구매: 국적에 맞는 국가 안전 인증 마크(KC, CE, FCC 등)를 반드시 확인해야 한다. 과충전·과전류·단락을 막아주는 3대 보호 회로와 온도 감지 센서(NTC)가 탑재된 제품을 선택하고, 리튬이온에 비해 비교적 안정적인 리튬폴리머 방식 및 검증된 제조사의 배터리 셀을 사용하는 것이 안전하다.
가정 내 보관: 장기 보관 시 배터리 잔량을 30~50% 수준으로 유지하는 것이 화학적으로 가장 안정적이다. 직사광선과 습기를 피해 10~25℃의 서늘한 곳에 두어야 하며, 금속함이나 방화 파우치(LiPo Bag)를 활용하는 것이 좋다. 외관이 부풀어 오르는 스웰링 현상이 관찰되면 즉시 사용을 중단하고 전용 폐기함에 버려야 한다.
이동 및 비행기 반입: 이동 중에는 열쇠나 동전 등 금속성물질과 분리하여 단락을 방지하고 가방 속 밀폐된 공간에서의 고속 충전을 자제해야 한다. 특히 항공기 이용 시 위탁수하물(부치는 짐) 반입은 절대 금지되며, 반드시 기내로 직접 들고 탑승해야 한다. 외관에 용량(Wh) 표기가 명확히 남아있는 100Wh 이하 제품에 한해 반입이 허용된다.
청샤완 화재는 특정 개인의 불운이 아닌, 첨단 기기를 누리는 현대인 모두가 매일 접하는 일상적 위험이다. 편리함에 가려진 안전불감증을 점검하고, 지금 내 머리맡과 가방 속 배터리를 다시 돌아보는 작은 실천이 대형 참사를 막는 유일한 열쇠다.
Power Bank Lithium Battery Safety: A Hidden Time Bomb in Your Hand
A power bank fire at an apartment in Cheung Sha Wan, Hong Kong, yesterday on August 26 (Wednesday), vividly demonstrated how a modern essential can become a fatal threat in a moment of negligence. In Hong Kong alone, 122 power bank-related fires have been reported in the past three years. Fires have occurred not only in residential areas but also in subway (MTR) trains and airplane cabins, leading to emergency evacuations of passengers.
The primary cause of a small power bank leading to a large-scale fire is 'thermal runaway.' If a lithium-ion cell is overcharged or receives an external impact, its temperature can instantaneously skyrocket to several hundred degrees, leading to an explosion. In an environment like Hong Kong, with high-density and high-rise residential buildings, the risk is maximized as lethal toxic gases like hydrogen fluoride generated during battery fires fill spaces quickly, risking rapid spread to adjacent units and severely restricting evacuation.
To prevent such disasters, safe practices in daily life, from purchasing to storage and transport, must be thoroughly adopted.
Safe Purchase: Be sure to check for a national safety certification mark (KC, CE, FCC, etc.) appropriate for the region. Choose products equipped with three key protection circuits to prevent overcharging, overcurrent, and short circuits, and a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor. Products using the relatively more stable lithium-polymer method and battery cells from verified manufacturers are safer.
In-Home Storage: When storing for a long time, maintaining a charge level between 30% and 50% is chemically most stable. Store in a cool, dry place between 10°C and 25°C, away from direct sunlight and humidity, preferably in a metal box or a fireproof pouch (LiPo Bag). If swelling is observed, immediately stop use and dispose of it in a dedicated battery disposal bin.
Transport and Airplane Carry-on: While traveling, keep separate from metallic objects like keys or coins to prevent short circuits, and avoid high-speed charging in an enclosed space inside a bag. For air travel, power banks are strictly prohibited in checked luggage; they must be carried in the cabin. Only products under 100Wh with clear capacity (Wh) markings are permitted.
The fire in Cheung Sha Wan is not an unfortunate event for a specific individual, but a daily risk that all modern people enjoying advanced technology face. Checking our safety complacency, often hidden behind convenience, and taking small actions like inspecting the batteries currently next to our beds and in our bags is the only key to preventing a large-scale tragedy.
