August 10, 2026 Global Economic News
1. Surge in Global Protectionism
WTO & IMF: "Trade Intervention Figures at All-Time High"
According to a joint report released by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the global trade intervention index for the first half of 2026 reached its highest level since the 2008 financial crisis.
Measures taken by various governments—such as tariff hikes, import bans, and subsidies for domestic industries—were found to have surged by approximately twofold compared to 2024. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warned that this intensification of protectionism could accelerate the fragmentation of global supply chains, potentially weakening this year's global trade growth rate to around 2.6%, and dealing the greatest blow to resource-poor and export-dependent economies in developing and emerging nations.
2. Intensifying Trade Conflicts Between North America and China… U.S. Imposes 50% Tariff Bomb on Canadian Goods
Based on Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, the U.S. government has signed an executive order imposing a high additional tariff of 50% on Canadian automobiles, alcohol, dairy products, and related derivatives, effective August 19. This retaliatory measure against the Canadian government's discrimination against U.S. products is escalating into the most serious North American trade conflict since the signing of the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement).
At the same time, citing national security, the U.S. has significantly tightened import restrictions on domestic robot technology, AI power inverters, and next-generation battery components targeting China. In response, China has also launched security investigations into advanced U.S. equipment, indicating that the technology war between the two nations is intensifying once again.
4. Monetary Policy of Major Central Banks Amid 'Slowing Growth vs. Core Inflation'
As second-quarter GDP growth rates in the three major economic blocs—the U.S., the Eurozone, and China—all fell short of market expectations, concerns about a global economic slowdown are becoming a reality. Despite falling energy prices, core inflation, driven by the service sector, remains above the 2% target set by central banks around the world. Consequently, the U.S. Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) are taking prudent steps, such as coordinating the pace of interest rate cuts while maintaining a stance of freezing rates.
5. Global AI Infrastructure Investment Surpasses $1 Trillion… Investment Scale Surges as Pillar of Global Economic Growth
According to reports by Goldman Sachs and Gartner, global capital expenditure (CapEx) related to AI is projected to surpass $1 trillion (approximately 1,380 trillion KRW) in 2026.
This is due to a significant increase in investment by not only U.S. Big Tech companies (hypescalers) but also high-tech firms in Korea, Taiwan, and Europe. Semiconductors (HBM, GPU), data center power grid infrastructure, and AI NPU computing equipment are acting as the driving force behind the growth of global manufacturing exports. Market experts analyzed that AI investment is becoming a key macroeconomic driver that is boosting global GDP growth by 0.9% to 1.3%p, similar to the period of internet and electricity penetration in the past.
