Salmonella Detected in Chicken Rice Sample
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on September 30 that a sample of Hainanese chicken rice was found to contain the pathogen Salmonella. The CFS is currently taking follow-up actions regarding the incident.
Test Results: A sample collected from a restaurant in Wan Chai was found to contain Salmonella in 25 grams of food, violating the microbiological guidelines which stipulate that Salmonella should not be detected in a 25g sample of ready-to-eat food.
Legal Framework & Penalties: Under the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, all food sold in Hong Kong—whether imported or locally produced—must be fit for human consumption. Offenders face a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and up to six months' imprisonment upon conviction.
