외국인 관광객 2명 체포
경찰은 차이완 MTR(홍콩 지하철) 차량기지의 보안 울타리를 절단하고 침입하여 정차 중인 열차 칸에 대형 그래피티 벽화를 그린 혐의를 받는 외국인 관광객 2명을 홍콩 국제공항 출국 제한 구역 내에서 체포했다.
30대와 40대인 이 두 용의자는 경찰의 감시 카메라 네트워크를 활용한 신속한 수사 끝에, 수요일 저녁 각각 미국과 호주로 향하는 비행기에 탑승하려던 중 탑승구에서 붙잡혔다.
이 사건은 지난 9월 9일, 오후 2시경, MTR 차량기지 직원이 정기 선로 점검을 하던 중 정차된 열차 칸 측면에 각각 가로 약 5미터, 세로 1미터 크기의 거대한 그래피티 작품 2점이 그려져 있는 것을 발견하면서 드러났다.
침입자들은 즉시 높이 3미터의 외곽 담장을 기어올라 인근 헝파추엔(Heng Fa Chuen) 주거 단지 방향으로 도주했다가 6시간 만에 공항에서 검거되었다.
경찰은 지역 주민과 관광객 모두에게 재물손괴는 형법상 중대한 범죄이며, 유죄 판결 시 최대 10년의 징역형에 처해질 수 있다고 경고했다.
Two Foreign Tourists Arrested
Police arrested two foreign tourists within the restricted departure area of Hong Kong International Airport on suspicion of cutting through the security fence at the Chai Wan MTR (Hong Kong subway) depot, trespassing, and spray-painting large graffiti murals on a stationary train carriage.
The two suspects—aged in their 30s and 40s—were apprehended at their respective boarding gates on Wednesday evening as they attempted to board flights bound for the United States and Australia, following a swift investigation that utilized the police's surveillance camera network.
The incident came to light on September 9 at approximately 2:00 PM, when an MTR depot employee conducting a routine track inspection discovered two massive graffiti artworks—each measuring roughly 5 meters wide by 1 meter high—painted on the side of a stationary train carriage.
The intruders had immediately climbed a 3-meter-high perimeter fence and fled toward the nearby Heng Fa Chuen residential complex before being apprehended at the airport six hours later.
Police warned both local residents and tourists that property damage is a serious criminal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison upon conviction.
