홍콩 경찰, 펀커피 암호화폐 사기
홍콩 경찰은 총 9400만 홍콩달러의 손실을 초래한 암호화폐 투자 사기 사건과 관련하여 사기 공모 혐의로 6명을 체포했다.
51세에서 64세 사이의 여성 5명과 남성 1명으로 구성된 이들은 8월 1일부터 3일까지 마카오 경찰과 합동 작전을 통해 검거되었다.
홍콩에서 체포된 사람들은 회사 임원, 주주, 그리고 프로젝트 홍보 및 투자자 모집을 담당했다.
마카오 경찰은 또한 360만 마카오 파타카규모의 관련 사건 9건에 연루된 가중 사기 혐의로 여성 2명을 체포했다.
8월 3일 현재, 홍콩 당국은 이 사기 사건과 관련된 신고를 225건 접수했으며, 피해자 연령대는 32세에서 83세 사이이며, 은퇴자들도 포함되어 있다.
경찰은 지난 7월부터 시민들이 '펀 커피 GCM 프로젝트(Fun Coffee GCM Projects)'라는 투자 사기에 참여했다는 신고를 받기 시작했다고 밝혔다.
조사 결과, 해당 회사는 첨단 커피 장비 및 커피 유전자 최적화 기술 연구에 집중하는 프로젝트라고 공개적으로 주장했다. 투자자들은 3단계 수익 구조를 내세워 암호화폐로 투자하도록 유도했다.
사기 조직은 투자 세미나, 사교 모임 등을 개최하여 투자 대상을 홍보하고, 친구와 친척을 모집하면 추가 보상을 주겠다고 권유했다.
투자에 관심을 보인 사람들은 모바일 앱을 다운로드하고 등록 절차를 완료하라는 지시를 받았다.
증권선물위원회(SFC)는 앞서 7월 13일 펀커피 GCM 프로젝트(Fun Coffee GCM Projects)를 의심스러운 투자 상품 목록에 올렸다.
이스트위크(East Week)의 단독 보도에 따르면, 베트남에 본사를 둔 이 회사는 암호화폐를 이용해 커피 사업에 투자하고 있으며, 3년 안에 기업공개(IPO)를 할 수 있다고 주장했다.
그러나 실제로는 다양한 혜택, 보너스, 경품 등을 통해 고객들을 유인하여 최대 295%의 수익률을 약속하는 특정 암호화폐를 구매하도록 유도했다.
이 회사는 작년 말 홍콩에 진출한 이후 대규모 마라톤 행사를 개최하고, 노인들을 스포츠 및 웰빙 홍보 영상에 출연시키는 데 막대한 비용을 투자하는 등 지역 사회 친화적이고 건강을 중시하는 이미지를 구축해 왔다.
베트남 당국이 5월에 이 그룹이 폰지 사기일 가능성이 있다고 경고했음에도 불구하고, 이들은 중국 본토, 한국, 싱가포르까지 사업을 확장했다.
Hong Kong Police Arrest Fun Coffee Cryptocurrency Fraud
Hong Kong police have arrested six people on charges of conspiracy to commit fraud in connection with a cryptocurrency investment fraud case that resulted in total losses of HK$94 million.
The group, consisting of five women and one man aged between 51 and 64, was apprehended during a joint operation with Macau police from August 1 to 3.
Those arrested in Hong Kong were company executives, shareholders, and responsible for promoting the project and recruiting investors.
Macau police also arrested two women on charges of aggravated fraud involved in nine related cases totaling 3.6 million Macau Pataca.
As of August 3, Hong Kong authorities have received 225 reports related to this fraud case; the victims range in age from 32 to 83 and include retirees.
Police stated that they began receiving reports last July that citizens had participated in an investment fraud known as the "Fun Coffee GCM Projects." The investigation revealed that the company publicly claimed to be a project focused on research into advanced coffee equipment and coffee gene optimization technology. It lured investors into investing in cryptocurrency by promoting a three-tiered profit structure.
The fraud organization promoted the investment target by holding investment seminars and social gatherings, and encouraged investors to recruit friends and relatives by promising additional rewards.
Those who showed interest in the investment were instructed to download a mobile app and complete the registration process.
The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) previously added Fun Coffee GCM Projects to its list of suspicious investment products on July 13.
According to an exclusive report by East Week, the Vietnam-based company claimed to be investing in the coffee business using cryptocurrency and that it could go public within three years.
However, in reality, it lured customers with various benefits, bonuses, and giveaways to induce them to purchase specific cryptocurrencies promising returns of up to 295%.
Since entering Hong Kong late last year, this company has built a community-friendly and health-conscious image by hosting large-scale marathon events and investing heavily in featuring the elderly in promotional videos for sports and well-being.
Despite Vietnamese authorities warning in May that the group might be a Ponzi scheme, they have expanded their business to mainland China, South Korea, and Singapore.
