■ 홍콩 재래시장 가이시(街市)-도시의 혈관을 밝히는 붉은 등갓

"힘들고 지칠 때 재래시장을 간다"는 말이 있다. 인생의 에너지나 의욕이 바닥나 세상을 혼자 견디는 듯한 외로움이 밀려올 때, 사람들은 시장 특유의 ‘원초적인 생명력’을 찾아 나선다.

재래시장은 서류나 관념의 세계가 아닌, 물질과 생명이 직관적으로 맞닿아 있는 공간이다. 수조에서 세차게 꼬리를 치는 생선, 갓 흙을 털어낸 채소, 모락모락 김이 나는 음식들. 이곳의 식재료들은 저마다 "나는 살아있다"고 온몸으로 웅변한다.

 무기력감에 빠져 모든 것을 포기하고 싶을 때, 미화되지 않은 시장의 생명력은 꺼져가던 마음에 강력한 ‘심폐소생술’이 되어준다. 그리고 내가 여전히 사람 사는 세상 속에 따뜻하게 연결되어 있음을 깨닫게 한다.

초고층 빌딩의 유리창이 차가운 도시의 위용을 자랑하는 센트럴과 몽콕의 거리. 그러나 한 블록만 안쪽 골목으로 들어서면 전혀 다른 세상의 소음과 냄새가 코끝을 사로잡는다. 

축축한 타일 바닥, 상인들의 억센 광둥어 목소리가 공간을 가득 채우는 곳. 바로 홍콩 사람들의 일상이 시작되고 완성되는 전통 재래시장, ‘가이시(街市·Wet Market)’다.

대형 마트의 정돈된 진열대에 익숙한 이들에게 이 미로 같은 시장은 날것의 공간처럼 느껴지지만, 들어서는 순간 가장 먼저 시선을 사로잡는 독특한 풍경이 있다.

 상점마다 낮게 늘어뜨려진 특유의 ‘붉은색 플라스틱 등갓(Red Market Lamp)’이다.

이 붉은 조명은 신선도를 지키고 식재료를 더욱 선명해 보이게 만드는 상인들의 오랜 지혜다. 빛 아래 놓인 고기는 신선한 선홍빛을 띠고, 채소의 푸른빛은 더욱 싱싱하게 대비된다

. 디지털 전광판과 깔끔한 LED가 도시를 덮어버린 오늘날에도, 이 투박한 붉은 등갓은 자리를 지키며 시장 전체를 따스하게 감싸 안는다. 이는 단순한 상술을 넘어, 수십 년간 이어져 온 홍콩 서민들의 아날로그적 생활 감각이자 전통의 상징이다.

 홍콩 골목마다 형성된 야외 거리 노점 시장(Street Market)과 민간 주택 단지 내 시장까지 모두 포함하면 최소 수백 개 이상이다. 이중, 홍콩 정부(FEHD)가  약 100여 개의 실내 공영 시장을 직접 관리한다.  골목골목에 퍼져 있는 야외 노점까지 합치면 홍콩 전역에 도시의 '모세혈관'처럼 퍼져 있다.

 홍콩 사람들은 어느 동네에 살든 걸어서 5~10분 거리에 자신만의 '가이시'를 품고 살아간다. 미식의 도시 홍콩을 빛내는 화려한 레스토랑의 뒤편에도, 매일 새벽 이 시장으로 흘러들어온 식재료와 상인들의 부지런함이 숨어 있다.

최첨단 금융 도시 홍콩을 움직이는 힘은 센트럴 빌딩 숲에서 나오는 수치와 데이터 같지만, 그 거대한 도시를 아래에서 받치고 있는 진짜 동력은 매일 아침 가이시를 밝히는 붉은 램프와 그 아래에서 피어나는 생명력이다.

 내가 멈춰 있는 것 같아 다 포기하고 싶을 때, 시장으로 향해 보자. 차가운 유리와 콘크리트 너머, 붉은 등갓 아래 펄떡이는 가이시의 풍경을 바라보고 있으면 비로소 가슴 깊이 느껴진다.

‘아, 세상은 여전히 이렇게나 뜨겁게 돌아가고 있구나. 그리고 홍콩이라는 도시는 지금 이 순간에도 살아 숨 쉬고 있구나. 그 원초적인 온기를 품고, 우리는 다시 오늘을 살아갈 동력을 얻는다.

Hong Kong’s Gai Si (街市): The Red Market Lamps Illuminating the City’s Arteries

There is a saying:  "When you are exhausted and weary, go to a traditional market." When life's energy is drained and you feel deeply isolated, facing the world alone, people seek out the "raw vitality" unique to the market.

The traditional market is a space where physical reality and life meet intuitively, far beyond abstract concepts or paperwork. Fish vigorously slapping their tails in tanks, vegetables freshly brushed of soil, and steaming-hot dishes—the ingredients here proclaim with their entire presence, "I am alive."

When sinking into helplessness and wanting to give up, the market's unvarnished vitality acts as a powerful "CPR" for a fading spirit. It reminds us that we are still warmly connected to a world where real people live.

The glass facades of skyscrapers boast the cold majesty of the city along the streets of Central and Mong Kok. Yet, stepping just one block into an inner alley, a completely different world of sounds and scents captivates your senses.

Damp tiled floors and the booming, rugged voices of Cantonese vendors fill the air. This is the "Gai Si" (街市 · Wet Market)—the traditional market where the daily lives of Hong Kong people begin and find completion.

For those accustomed to the orderly displays of large supermarkets, this maze-like market may feel somewhat raw. However, upon entering, one unique sight immediately catches the eye: the iconic red plastic lamps (Red Market Lamps) hanging low above every stall.

This red lighting is an age-old wisdom of local vendors to preserve freshness and enhance the vividness of their goods. Under its glow, meat displays a vibrant crimson hue, while the green of fresh vegetables stands out in rich contrast.

Even today, as digital displays and sleek LED lights cover the city, these rustic red plastic lamp shades hold their ground, wrapping the entire market in warm light. Far beyond a mere sales tactic, it represents the analog sensibilities and traditional legacy of Hong Kong's working class, preserved over decades.

From around 100 indoor public markets directly managed by the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) to outdoor street stalls tucked into every alley, hundreds of markets spread across Hong Kong like the city's "capillaries."

No matter where they live, Hong Kong residents carry a "Gai Si" of their own within a 5-to-10-minute walk. Behind the glamour of Hong Kong's world-renowned culinary scene lies the daily diligence of vendors and the fresh ingredients delivered to these markets every dawn.

The true force driving the cutting-edge financial hub of Hong Kong may seem like the numbers and data emerging from the concrete jungle of Central. Yet, the real engine supporting this vast city from below might just be the red lamps illuminating the Gai Si each morning and the vibrant life blossoming beneath them.

When you feel stuck and tempted to abandon everything, head to the market. Beyond the cold glass and concrete, gazing at the pulsating scene of the Gai Si under the red lamps, you will feel it deep within your chest:

"Ah, the world is still turning with such fiery passion. And the city of Hong Kong is breathing vibrant life at this very moment."

Embracing that raw warmth, we regain the momentum to live through today.
